Food Safety Supervisor NSW

Mode of Delivery

This course is delivered online with a required workplace assessment.

• Online learning and assessments - Complete the theory at your own pace in our student portal. Save your progress and return anytime.
• Workplace assessment - Students must organise access to an operational food preparation area. A supervisor or industry expert observes you using a checklist we provide.
• Host Site Pre-Approval and Declaration - Choose a commercial kitchen and ask a supervisor or food handler to complete a short online form confirming the site is suitable and safe. The form is sent directly to Eclipse Education for review and approval, and must be approved before any shifts begin. We provide this form when you start your online theory.

We provide all forms and guidance once you enrol. The responsibility for finding a suitable commercial kitchen lies with the student, and we make the process as simple and supported as possible.

NSW learners will complete the national unit(s) first. Once completed, an additional NSW-specific Key Focus Areas module will automatically become available in the student portal and can be completed at the learner's own pace.

NSW Food Safety Supervisor Requirements

NSW has additional requirements beyond the national unit(s) that apply in other states.

To be recognised as a Food Safety Supervisor in NSW, learners must complete:

• Required national unit pathway (hospitality or retail)
• Mandatory NSW Food Authority Key Focus Areas
• Assessment for both components

NSW Food Authority Key Focus Areas

Mandatory NSW government requirements: These Key Focus Areas must be completed before the NSW Food Safety Supervisor certificate can be issued.

• Allergen management - identify allergens and reduce cross-contact risks.
• Safe egg handling - control storage, preparation, and cooking risks.
• Cleaning and sanitising practices - maintain hygienic food contact surfaces.
• Food Act offences - understand key legal obligations and penalties.

NSW Certificate Requirements

Important: Completion of the national unit(s) alone does not meet NSW Food Safety Supervisor requirements. The NSW Food Authority Food Safety Supervisor certificate is issued only after you have completed the required national unit(s) and the NSW Food Authority Key Focus Areas.

For the hospitality pathway, NSW requires completion of SITXFSA006 and the prerequisite SITXFSA005 (Use hygienic practices for food safety).

If you have not completed SITXFSA005 yet, you can complete it with us here: Food Handling Course (SITXFSA005).

After completing SITXFSA006, the NSW Key Focus Areas, and providing evidence of SITXFSA005 completion, your name and student ID are passed to the NSW Food Authority so your NSW Food Authority Food Safety Supervisor certificate can be issued.

The NSW Food Safety Supervisor certificate is valid for 5 years, and it must be kept on site and produced during inspections.

Unit Overview

The Participate in safe food handling practices (SITXFSA006) (Food Safety for Supervisors certificate) is a nationally accredited unit of competency. This course provides the recognised certification needed to complete this role.

A Food Safety Supervisor is a person who has advanced food safety skills and knowledge and has the ability to oversee the food safety operations of the food business.

NSW pathway clarification (three-step process):

• Step 1: Complete SITXFSA005 (Use hygienic practices for food safety).
• Step 2: Complete SITXFSA006 (this unit).
• Step 3: Complete the NSW Food Authority Key Focus Areas module (available after SITXFSA006).

After completing this Participate in safe food handling practices unit, you will be able to work in the food production industry and is recommended for anyone who handles food for sale or distribution to customers. This unit is well-suited to people who work in the following areas where food is made available to the general public:

• Restaurants
• Clubs
• Hotels
• Attractions
• Any business that operates a kitchen
• Commercial catering and retail venues where food is stored, prepared, displayed, served and disposed of
• Cafes
• Events and conference venues
• Fast food restaurants
• Retail food outlets such as sandwich shops and food court outlets
• Tour operators involved in the preparation and service of food at temporary sites
