White Card State Requirements in New South Wales
What SafeWork NSW requires before you can work on a construction site in New South Wales
The short version
- Unit required: CPCWHS1001 Prepare to Work Safely in the Construction Industry
- Minimum duration: 6 hours of trainer-led delivery
- Approved delivery: face-to-face, or live online in real time with a trainer and assessor
- Not permitted: self-paced or slide-based online courses
- Identity: 100 points of evidence of identity
- Minimum age: 14 years
- Where you must be: physically located in New South Wales for the whole class
- Who can deliver it: a Registered Training Organisation approved by SafeWork NSW
Who needs a White Card in NSW?
Anyone carrying out construction work in New South Wales needs general construction induction training before they start. That includes new and existing workers, apprentices, labourers, tradespeople, contractors, supervisors, and people who need to enter a construction site unaccompanied. If you only visit a site under continuous escorted supervision you may not need one, but most employers and principal contractors will still ask to see a card before allowing site access.
Approved delivery methods
This is the requirement people most often get wrong. In New South Wales the White Card cannot be completed as a self-paced online course. SafeWork NSW requires the training to be delivered by a trainer and assessor in real time, either:
Face-to-face
In a physical classroom with a qualified trainer and assessor.
Live online, in real time
A connected, classroom-style session over video conferencing such as Google Meet, with your camera and microphone on for the full session.
If a provider offers you an NSW White Card you can finish at your own pace, in your own time, with no scheduled session and no trainer, that course will not meet the SafeWork NSW requirement. Eclipse Education delivers the compliant live online option, and every date in the calendar above is a real scheduled session.
Evidence of identity - the 100 point check
Before your card can be issued you must provide 100 points of evidence of identity, and your trainer must sight those documents. Between them, the documents you produce need to show:
- a photograph of you
- your date of birth
- your signature
- your current residential address
Different document types are worth different point values, and the combination matters as much as the count. Check the current list and point values before your class so you are not turned away on the day.
Check the identity requirements before your class
Our summary of the accepted documents and their point values.
View identity requirements (PDF)Where you need to be during the course
For live online delivery you must be physically located within New South Wales for the entire duration of the class. You do not need to permanently live in NSW, but you must be in the state from the moment the session begins until it concludes. Because the course runs as a single session, students who live close to the border commonly attend from a workplace, office or other suitable location inside New South Wales.
What you receive, and when
- Statement of Attainment - nationally recognised evidence that you have completed CPCWHS1001, issued by the RTO.
- Statement of Training - interim evidence you can show an employer while your physical card is produced. It is intended to cover you for up to 60 days.
- SafeWork NSW White Card - the physical card. SafeWork NSW advises most cards arrive within about 30 days of the application being submitted.
How long does a NSW White Card last?
A New South Wales White Card does not carry an expiry date, so there is no routine renewal or refresher requirement. There is one important catch: a card can become void if you have not carried out construction work for two consecutive years. If you have been out of the industry that long you will generally need to complete the training again before returning to site.
Is a NSW White Card valid in other states?
Yes. CPCWHS1001 is a nationally recognised unit and construction induction cards are recognised across Australia, so a card issued in New South Wales can be used for construction work in other states and territories. The reverse also applies - if you already hold a valid interstate White Card, it is generally recognised for construction work in NSW and you would not normally need to repeat the training.
Choosing a provider
The training must be delivered by a Registered Training Organisation approved to deliver construction induction training for New South Wales. Two checks worth doing before you pay anyone:
- Confirm the provider displays the Nationally Recognised Training logo against the course.
- Look the RTO up on the National Register to confirm it is registered and that CPCWHS1001 is on its scope.
Please note: this page summarises the New South Wales requirements as we understand them and is provided as general guidance, not legal advice. Requirements can change. SafeWork NSW is the authority on construction induction training in NSW - always confirm the current rules on the SafeWork NSW white card page. If anything here is unclear, call us on (03) 5201 0569 and we will talk you through it.
