White Card Course Melbourne: What You Need to Know Before You Book

Planning to work on a construction site in Melbourne? A general construction induction card, commonly called a White Card, is one of the first things you need before you start construction work. Victoria has specific rules about how the training must be delivered, so it is worth checking the details before you book.

Short answer: in Victoria, White Card training must be completed face to face in a classroom with an approved training organisation. What is a White Card?

A White Card is the common name for general construction induction training. The current nationally recognised unit is CPCCWHS1001 — Prepare to work safely in the construction industry. Older pages and records may refer to the earlier code CPCWHS1001.

The unit introduces the work health and safety responsibilities, construction hazards, risk controls, personal protective equipment, safety communication and emergency procedures that every construction worker needs to understand. It is not a trade licence, a substitute for a site-specific induction or a replacement for any high-risk work licence or other competency your role requires.

Victoria White Card requirements

Before booking a Melbourne course, make sure the offer matches the current Victorian requirements:

• Face-to-face classroom delivery: WorkSafe Victoria does not permit general construction induction training to be completed entirely online in Victoria.
• An approved provider: the training must be delivered by a registered training organisation authorised to conduct the course and apply for the card.
• At least six hours: a short quiz or ultra-cheap online certificate is not the same as compliant Victorian White Card training.

Can you complete a White Card online in Victoria?

No, not as an entirely online course. WorkSafe Victoria requires the Victorian general construction induction course to be delivered face to face in a classroom. If you see a short online course marketed specifically as a Melbourne or Victorian White Card, check the provider, unit, regulator requirements and card-issuing process before paying. A certificate from an unapproved course may not help you meet an employer's construction-site requirements.

What happens after you pass?

After you successfully complete the training and assessment, the RTO records your result and applies to WorkSafe Victoria for your White Card. WorkSafe Victoria says the card may take up to 60 days to arrive by mail, so keep the completion documents supplied by your RTO and follow its instructions while you wait.

Keep your Statement of Attainment and any card application confirmation. You will still need a site-specific induction before starting at a particular workplace, and you may need additional licences or competencies for tasks such as operating plant, working at heights, traffic control or asbestos-related work.

Is a Victorian White Card recognised interstate?

A White Card that has been lawfully obtained can generally be recognised across Australian states and territories. Recognition does not remove local safety duties: the host site can still require an induction, and the regulator in the state where you work may have its own guidance about currency and evidence.
