We offer two food handling options so you can choose what fits your needs. The accredited SITXFSA005 course includes online theory and short video demonstrations, plus a required workplace practical in a commercial kitchen where a supervisor (industry expert) observes you and completes a checklist. The Basic (non-accredited) course is 100% online, self-paced, and can be completed from anywhere.
Course InformationOur food handling courses are designed to be flexible and easy to complete at your own pace. You can stop and start whenever you like, so you don't need to finish everything in one sitting. The Basic (non-accredited) course is completely online and can usually be completed in just a few hours. The Accredited SITXFSA005 course includes the same online theory and short video demonstrations, but also requires a workplace practical observation in a commercial kitchen. During this shift (minimum 6 hours), a supervisor or industry expert will observe your food handling tasks and complete a checklist that is sent directly to Eclipse Education for review.
Both options provide practical, useful training that can be applied in a wide range of roles. Many businesses encourage staff to refresh their knowledge regularly, because structured training helps ensure food safety standards are consistently met. Nationally accredited training in particular is valued by employers because it meets strict compliance requirements and is recognised across Australia.
You can choose the course that best suits your situation. The accredited course is ideal if you're starting out in the food industry or need a recognised Statement of Attainment. The non-accredited course is a lower-cost option that is great for refreshers and general knowledge, though it does not lead to a nationally recognised certificate.
Many businesses will enrol staff in the non-accredited course each year to keep them up to date with best practices. This helps reduce risks, improve food safety, and ensure everyone is confident in their role. The accredited course is overseen by qualified trainers and assessors to ensure accuracy, compliance, and accountability - giving you peace of mind that your qualification is legitimate and fully recognised nationwide.
We are transparent with the entire process so you always know what is required. If you're not sure which option to take, you can even start the course for free before making a payment.
Why Get a Food Handlers Certificate...The food handling certificate is often the first important step toward a career in the food industry. It opens doors to work as a chef, server, packer, caterer, food processor and more. Safe food handling is relevant across many roles, and it can even benefit people in non-food jobs where handling food occasionally becomes part of the work. Having this certification helps ensure safer food for everyone.
Gaining this certificate also demonstrates to employers that you have specific skills and knowledge that are valuable in the workplace. It shows you can perform to national standards and meet expectations - something that strengthens your resume and gives you an edge in a competitive job market. It's not just about learning food safety tasks, but also about showing you can follow directions, remember key information, and complete assessments to a recognised standard.
Certification also protects both customers and employers. It reduces the risk of contamination, lowers the chance of foodborne illness, and minimises legal or compliance risks for businesses. Employers recognise the value of trained, compliant staff and often require certification to demonstrate due diligence.
In many cases, this certification is recognised outside of Australia. Australian standards are highly regarded, so your accreditation may also be accepted overseas, or you may only need a short refresher before working in another country.
Food Handling and Food Safety are related but different qualifications. Make sure you choose the one that matches your role and responsibilities.
Food Handlers are directly involved in preparing, packing, or serving food. Food Safety Supervisors perform some of the same tasks but also carry responsibility for overseeing others, checking compliance, and ensuring food safety practices are followed throughout the workplace.
The Food Safety Supervisor course is longer and more detailed, covering the same content as the Food Handling course plus additional leadership and compliance responsibilities. If you're unsure which course to take, speak with your supervisor or contact our support team - we'll help guide you to the right option.
In general, the Food Handling Certificate suits packers, servers, and cooks, while the Food Safety course is best for head chefs, supervisors, and managers.
